Castledare Miniature Railway
Come and enjoy a train ride through the Canning River Regional Park. Castledare
Miniature railway was established in 1963 by a group of model engineers looking
for a place to run a locomotive recently built by one of the group. Permission was
granted for a track to be built on what was then the Castledare Boys Home.
There was a catch, in that something had to be operational for the next open day,
which was just weeks away. A length of straight track was laid and trains ran on the
open day.
From these small beginnings came a club which operates the longest club
operated track in Australia with approximately five kilometres of track and a fleet of
approximately 25 locomotives and over 40 passenger carriages.
Our track winds along the banks of the Canning River and depending on the day
your train may even cross one of the tributaries to the river to journey through the
wetlands area.
Passengers board the train at Niana Station (the main station complex) and travel
towards Fern Road and on occasions, venture as far as the Kent Street weir before
returning to Niana Station and the main picnic ground.
Please feel free to make use of the picnic area at our main station with it's wood
fired barbecues and play equipment. Our running days during the period of May until
October fall into the official steam season and therefore more steam locomotives
may be seen operating during this time however a limited amount of steam
locomotives may be seen in action all year round.
As a safety requirement, fully enclosed footwear must be worn by those
intending to ride on the trains.
There is no entry fee to the grounds however costs apply for train rides.
